Attunement: A Culture of Mature Collaboration

In Greg’s last post, he talked about the necessary mindset shift people will have to make to navigate the impact of AI in the workplace. Handling the integration will mean becoming more system-oriented in thinking.  Greg used the analogy of orchestrating a jazz big band to meet the moment of directing multiple AI agent workstreams simultaneously.

Greg introduced our Ensemble Accelerator (EA) system and Quality of Teams EA (QofT™) diagnostic which help organizations see the structural and systemic forces driving their team dynamics. The dual lens of QofT™ includes: an alignment portion that reveals the team's structural composition based on each member’s workstyle placement in one of four capability zones, and an attunement section to measure a team’s cultural maturity and how effectively individuals collaborate under real conditions of complexity, pressure, and change.

Quality of Teams (EA QofT™) Diagnostic team scoring reveals collective capabilities, shared blind spots, and cultural patterns that shape how the team collaborates. Alignment without attunement produces efficient friction; attunement without alignment produces harmony without results. High-performing teams require both. The attunement data reveals the team’s relational maturity and is the focus of this newsletter post.

A thriving culture has values that motivate and inspire through shared practices, language, and commitments based on connection and flourishing.

Maturity is reaching the peak of our emotional, cognitive, and social behavior to achieve our highest values—the very best of what we want.

Maturity then is:

  • Conscious experience of independence AND interdependence. As in jazz, we strive to balance structure and freedom simultaneously.

Maturity is also:

  • An integration of behavioral patterns and motives to work more effectively as an organized whole.

Maturity also . . .

  • Emphasizes a clear comprehension of purpose, direction, and intention, which contributes to the feeling that work is meaningful

Through this developmental growth dynamic, we strive for coherent sense-making, which can lead to harmony within yourself and with others—even with differences present. This is the jazz groove and rhythm called swingin,’ and what will be essential to elevate and strengthen people for the AI-driven work ahead.

Attunement = Cultural Maturity

Creating Relational Maturity Through Jazz Dimensions

The QofT™ attunement evaluates an individual’s personal experience and patterns when working in team settings across all teams they have been part of—not just their current team.

Attunement is assessed through four dimensions grounded in jazz, two jazz principles and two practices:

Antagonistic Cooperation assesses your personal comfort with creative tension, constructive conflict, and balancing challenge with support

Ensemble Mindset evaluates your orientation toward individual vs. collective success

Big Ears measures listening quality, interpersonal awareness, and receptivity

Syncopation determines adaptability, comfort with change, and ability to work with diverse rhythms

Teams are evaluated across progressive maturity states and appointed an ensemble maturity level (e.g., Steady Tempo, Swingin’ Harmony). This provides a practical view and baseline of their current collaborative readiness—not aspiration.

Typical attunement friction is also identified:

  • Strong intent to collaborate without the skills to navigate conflict

  • Listening deficits that undermine trust and decision quality

  • Change fatigue or rigidity during rapid transformation

Attunement results explain why structurally sound teams may still struggle to perform.

When structure and collaboration are aligned, teams stop compensating for friction and start generating momentum. That is the ultimate promise of QofT™: transforming groups of capable individuals into high-performing ensembles that can execute, adapt, and scale with confidence.

The power of our interdependence and cultural maturity will afford us the ability to navigate a terrain replete with the uncertainties that an AI-powered world will bring.
